trying to make vietnamese iced coffee ☕️

my cousin got me a phin and some vietnamese coffee grounds a while back and i finally got around to experimenting with it. i went on tiktok to look up how to use the phin (it has so many parts!) and what a vietnamese coffee is supposed to be.

the bag of grounds had strong caramel and chocolate aroma - more infused rather than natural hints. it smells pretty charred as well. i learnt on tiktok that usually vietnamese coffee beans are roasted pretty dark with chocolate, which perhaps explained the pronounced sweet notes 😊

i tried to follow the recipes shared by various tiktok creators but made some minor tweaks based on my personal preference. instead of 2 tablespoons of condensed milk, i went with 1 heap teaspoon as i was afraid that it’d be too sweet for my liking. i used 2 teaspoon of grounds instead of 2 tablespoons as i made it in the afternoon and can’t have it too strong 🤡

i had it over ice as apparently vietnamese coffee uses lots and lots of ice to melt the potent concentrated coffee. i went light-handed as i’m trying to cut down on ice intake 😂

overall, i enjoyed the whole process of making a nice glass of vietnamese iced coffee! it’s different compared to the usual drip, or espresso-based coffee that i take. the phin was pretty easy to use and wash (compared to the french press 🤡, but still paper filter easiest).

i also tried it black and it’s actually really good - both hot and iced. the bitter notes are more muted, but the coffee flavour is bold and really good! i would definitely prefer it black 😂 but this attempt to make vietnamese iced coffee has definitely added something new to my usual coffee experience 😊
