Ingredients:
π· 1 bottle of red wine (I bought cabernet sauvignon from the supermarket)
π· 2 cups apple cider
π· β cup brown sugar (I used dark)
π· 4-6 whole cloves
π· 2 cinnamon sticks
π· 1 navel orange
π· ΒΌ cup triple sec
Instructions:
1οΈβ£ Pour whole bottle of wine into large pot and cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, while preparing orange.
2οΈβ£ Zest about 1/2-3/4 of the orange. Carefully cut one or two thin slices for garnish. Juice remaining orange.
3οΈβ£ Strain freshly-squeezed orange juice into pot and add zest and apple cider.
4οΈβ£ Carefully add brown sugar, cloves, and cinnamon sticks to pot. Stir and cook until sugar is fully dissolved.
5οΈβ£ Bring wine to a boil and immediately lower heat to low so wine can cook at a simmer for 30-45 minutes. Stir occasionally.
6οΈβ£ Take pot off heat and stir triple sec in. Strain wine into heat-safe container and ladle wine while itβs still warm into serving mugs. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and orange slices.
Commentary:
Making this post was my first time EVER trying to make mulled wine, and itβs SO simple and delicious! Iβm definitely going to be making this a bunch of times this winter, especially because itβs perfect for the holiday season.
This batch came out quite sweet, so if youβd prefer a stronger alcoholic taste or for it to just not be as sweet, you can add slightly less apple cider or brown sugar, or you can buy a drier wine. You can also omit the triple sec if youβd like, or use brandy.
Cheers!
