One of my biggest fears going into motherhood was that I wasn’t going to succeed at breastfeeding. I’m one of 5, so I watched my mom breastfeed my 4 little brothers and knew it was a bond I wanted to experience so badly when I became a mama.

Now that I have been breastfeeding (and loving it!) for nearly 2 months, I wanted to share some of the things I’ve done to help create a seamless, enjoyable breastfeeding experience as a first-time mom. Save this if you’re struggling, or if you plan to start breastfeeding soon!

1. POWER THROUGH THE ENGORGEMENT PERIOD

Oh my god. Nobody told me how freaking painful it would be when my milk first came in! I was not anticipating dealing with that discomfort in addition to all the discomforts of postpartum healing. I could see how this would be so painful that it would lead to some moms deciding they don’t want to continue! But this painful engorgement DOES end within a few days once your supply begins to regulate. In the meantime, don’t be afraid to pump just a tiny bit to take the edge off (this should help with making sure you don’t get flat nipples, too) and give yourself massages in the shower.

2. EXPERIMENT WITH POSITIONING

I recommend making sure you have a solid latch before you start experimenting too much! But once you have that down, make sure baby feels secure & can tilt their head back for a good latch, mess around with the boppy (or other nursing pillows), and get comfortable! Side-lying position is a personal favorite for us. Remember to keep your shoulders relaxed - you’re going to be in this position a lot and don’t want to be tense!

3. USE A SIDECAR CRIB/BASSINET

I’m a huge advocate for safe co-sleeping and its benefits for breastfeeding (and reducing the risk of SIDS). We use a bassinet that zips open on the side and straps to our king bed, so baby is always within arm’s reach but still on his own surface. This makes breastfeeding in the middle of the night so much easier and allows me to hear his hunger cues easier while I’m sleeping.

4. ADVOCATE FOR THE GOLDEN HOUR

I feel like most hospitals/birthing centers implement and encourage the golden hour at this point, but if they don’t - advocate for yourself and baby! My baby and I were able to begin breastfeeding almost immediately upon delivery, and I swear that instant connection and learning early set us up for success.

Most importantly, don’t put too much pressure on yourself (FED is best) and don’t hesitate to ask for help! Lactation consultants are amazing resources!
