Dating and making new friends in NYC is stressful, intimidating, and can honestly feel impossible sometimes. That’s why I’m sharing my secret to how I’ve been able to meet new people (friends and others 😉) while living here: Singles Mixers.

💋What are they:

These are parties where (mostly) single people gather under one roof to flirt, dance, drink, and have a good time. They’re usually hosted at a bar unless the party is more specific like a cooking class or tennis class.

💋Who hosts them:

There are tons of people and social clubs in the city that host events for singles to mingle. I’ve been to a few not so great ones and many more that are SO much fun. My absolute favorite is Drinks First. It’s hosted by a woman of color who makes sure the parties feel diverse and welcoming.

💋How to sign up:

The best move is to follow accounts like Drinks First, Lox Club, and We Met IRL on IG because that’s where they post updates and RSVP links.

💋How much do these cost?

It truly depends on the host, venue, and party itself. Some parties you can RSVP for free and show up. These are usually a bit more crowded though. Others require you to buy a ticket or even fill out an application in order to be added to the guest list. While this might sound exclusionary, it’s actually how they make sure there are enough men to women at the party so that everyone has the chance to make a connection! A lot of these parties will also be hosted at smaller venues/bars and so a limited guest list might be necessary.

💋Will I meet someone?

This all depends on you! My best advice is to go alone instead of with your friends so it forces you out of your comfort zone. Actually, some events will curate the list so that you HAVE to come alone. It’s much easier to approach and meet people when you aren’t already in a group. The events where I’ve gone alone are the events that I meet the most people at (both romantic and platonic). The events where I’ve gone with friends are the ones where I really didn’t meet anyone! So do what feels good for you, but also remember that this is a chance to meet NEW people (not talk to the ones you already know).
