we live in a world that gives us every opportunity not to stop and sit w our emotions - a million distractions and a culture of constant busyness/consumerism means that taking the time to notice, sit with, and process our feelings takes seriously intentional effort 💫
reasons we avoid our feelings ⤵️
⭐️ we’re afraid that they’ll be too big for us to handle or cope with
⭐️ we want to be strong, and perceive difficult feelings as weakness
⭐️ those feelings are inconsistent with our self image (ie we don’t think of ourselves as a jealous person so we pretend we aren’t jealous)
⭐️ we don’t feel safe allowing ourselves to feel big emotions (likely due to childhood trauma)
⭐️ we’re afraid that if we let ourselves feel them, we won’t be able to escape them
i think we all tend to have a go-to for avoiding our feelings. mine is definitely intellectualizing and distraction 😅
