Over the past few years, I’ve been tasked with building multiple teams from scratch. I love interviewing and getting to know so many people, but whewww do I have to look at a lot of resumes. Here are some of my hot takes that I think may help you in the job search.

1️⃣ No more than one page

A hiring manager or recruiter is often looking at hundreds of resumes for a single position. They do so quickly, so you want to make sure your resume has key info and key info only. If your resume is over one page, it’s really likely that all of the pages that follow the first one won’t be seen!

2️⃣ Link out to things

There should be at least one hyperlink on your resume in case people want to learn more about you or see more of your work! Right now, I have links to my portfolio and LinkedIn on my resume.

3️⃣ Your GPA doesn’t belong on a resume

Unless you’re applying to graduate school, have just graduated from college, or are in college applying to internships, your GPA has no place on your resume. I’ve looked through thousands of resumes and not ONCE did someone’s GPA influence my decision to move them forward in a process or not. In many fields, it’s completely irrelevant.

4️⃣ No personal statement or objective necessary

I find personal statements really clunky. They take up valuable real estate on your resume which you could be using to talk more about your accomplishments and experience.

5️⃣ No listing out your skills

I cringe so hard when someone has a list of skills on their resume! Your skills should come through your descriptions of jobs you’ve done in the past. I’m talking about when someone has things like “collaborative,” “communication,” and “creative” written on there. Remember, nothing on your resume should be subjective ☺️. One exception to this, in my head, is if you speak additional languages. Definitely put that on there! #lemon8partner #careeradvice #resumetips #jobsearch #resume
