How is adult nursing different from pediatrics? 🧸

Prior to becoming a pediatric nurse, I was an adult medsurg nurse for 2 years! Here are some of the key differences that I’ve learned throughout my time as a pediatric nurse who transitioned from the adult patients:

🎀 pediatric population in a pediatric unit can range from a day old newborn to a 23 year old! Especially in the PICU setting.

🎀 adult nursing targets older adults and seniors, even though minimum age is 18 years old

🎀 when assessing the patient, in pediatrics one speaks mostly to parents and family. Adults are self autonomous and will speak for themselves for the most part.

🎀 nurses must trouble shoot possible ethical issues that may occur due to patients being minors in a pediatric unit

🎀 pediatric diagnosis are mostly developmental, acute, or congenital. Adult diagnosis are typically chronic or age related
