We took over care of HY’s 10 year old cat, Baobao, when we moved into our home. We knew we had to cat proof our windows for Baobao’s safety but we didn’t like the look of window grilles. Baobao is a relatively calm but skittish cat with a big fear of the outside so we felt quite safe about our decision that we didn’t require the ‘heavy duty’ grilles as she is in no way an escape artist.

We decided to go with mesh panels as it has the additional benefit of being able to keep insects from freely flying into our home.

🪟Toilet and Kitchen

As they are relatively small and positioned higher up with no easy access ledge for baobao, we DIY’ed the magnetic insect mesh in these areas to reduce costs as much as we could. However since then, we have been having some trouble with the kitchen window, it’s size makes the screen a bit too heavy for the adhesive on the magnetic strip to keep up and we’ve had it fall a few times already on the 4 plus months since we put it up.

🪟Bedroom and Living Room

For these areas our windows are exceptionally large, as such we knew we couldn’t DIY. We did some googling and found Magnetic Mesh Pte Ltd who suggested that we mount the mesh on frames on the ~outside~ of the windows and only for the window spaces we commonly leave open. This was a great solution for us as it meant that we wouldn’t see the mesh when our windows are closed. In total for both the living room and bedroom windows we paid about 2.1k and we are very happy with the results! The mesh used is a stronger mesh that’s resistant to scratching and the mesh is screwed into the frames for added anti-cat security. In order to clean the mesh, we plan on using a steam vacuum, but if we need to, we can also unscrew the mesh from the frames and remove the panels for a deeper clean.

We do carry Baobao up to enjoy the view and the breeze but we’re pretty sure she’s mostly just staring at the insects in our corridor. 😅
