Reviewing all the new movie musicals!

It is a GREAT time to be a fan of movie musicals!

Wonka- This was not a movie I was at all looking forward to, but I was pleasantly surprised! It was incredibly charming and has a surprising amount of heart. Timothee Chalamet is good as Willy Wonka, but sometimes struggles with some of the cookiness (he’s just too cool for his own good). But it’s still a fun movie for the whole family and I think will become a classic for many. ⭐️3.5/5

Color Purple- One of my favorite musicals and this film adaptation absolutely does it justice. Some really excellent performances, including an amazing debut from Fantasia. Danielle Brooks is giving the performance of her career. The new songs felt unecessary, but it’s beautifully shot and performed. One of the best movie musical adaptations in a while! ⭐️4/5

Mean Girls- I have said before, I am not a fan of the Mean Girls stage musical. But I thought this movie improved upon the stage version in almost every way. It cut most of the bad songs, has a killer cast who all make their roles their own, and some great new jokes that bring it into 2024. Some of the lyrics are still rough, and not all the new orchestrations work for me, but overall I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would! ⭐️3.5/5
