Hey Writers!

I’m in a weird moment with my writing right now. I have a few books I’m working on, all at a slightly different stage of completion. The one that keeps floating to the top of my focus pile, the one closest to being done, is also the one I’m struggling with because it feels like a waste of time to finish it. I don’t think it’s marketable from an agent or publisher’s viewpoint, which makes me second guess the time I’m spending on it. I have another book, the one that keeps falling in second place for my attention, that I’m pretty sure is in line with what agents are looking for. That doesn’t mean it will be chosen, but I do think it has a stronger chance. So my logical brain wants me to focus on that, but my heart and my creative brain are fixated on the first.

The problem—when I sit down to write, the two sides of my brain go to war. It’s a curious conundrum, shifting my focus to what could launch my career vs the story I want to be writing. And I know many of you will say, write the story you want to write. But if like me you’re trying to have a career as an author, you can understand the inner conundrum. And yet, it seems nothing else is allowed to be written until this first story has been told. If only I could get that “practical” side of my brain to shut the heck up so that I can focus and get it done.
