I was sent a digital copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review and honestly I wish I didn't accept it.

If I was able to just ignore this book without my NetGalley score taking a hit I would have. I was so excited to receive an ARC (advance reader copy) for this book when I first saw the email. I'm sure if you're on romance booktok you've seen Sierra Simone floating around and I've only heard good things so I jumped at the chance to read this. I will say that the portion of the book from I would say about 40%-70% absolutely was addictive and I understand why so many people worship her but the rest of the book....

I think the biggest downfall is that if the marketing of this was done differently I wouldn't have even bothered to read it. The way the email was sent and even the synopsis of this makes it sound like this book is going to be a low fantasy retelling. If you've ever read The Neon Gods series by Kattee Robert that is where I thought this would sit, not exactly magical but the entire world system being fictional so imagine my surprise when not only is this contemporary but it's also obvious the author pulled inspiration from real life recent American military conflicts.

It made the first 30% of this unbearable and was the reason it took me two months to finish. I actually looked back at the email to make sure I hadn't just skimmed and missed the part where this said the American military was going to play a giant role in the story but it's never mentioned and mutuals of mine said they also had no idea before reading or me pointing it out so I don't think it was on me this time.

Not to mention why was it not explicitly stated this was book 1 of 3 and was going to end on a cliffhanger??? Is it even a true romance then???

The reason I'm giving this a 2.75 and not the 2.25 I actually think it deserves is cause I am intrigued to say the least. I want to see what could have possibly convinced this author to drag this for 3 books and will prob request my library buys book 2 so I can skim it to see what happens.
