I want to preface this by saying I live and work in NYC. The cost of living is higher here, but also the paychecks are higher. I make annually $110,000 as a Marketing Manager, and this year, I get $20,000 in bonus divided throughout the 12-month period. This paycheck also includes my bonus.
1. The very first thing I do is give my parents money. I give them around $1000 a month, and I'm very happy to do so. They have done so much for me in life, and it's my pleasure to take care of them in retirement age.
2. I had an internet bill this paycheck, so $99 went there.
3. Also, the phone bill for $90.
4. I live alone and I like to host events for my friends once in a while. This Saturday, I'm having a housewarming party, and I told my friends I would take care of the food. It gives me pleasure to be a host in my new apartment!
5. I have to put down half of the rent for this paycheck, which I do every paycheck. I pay $2300 in rent for a one-bedroom in Brooklyn, and that's actually a deal.
6. I'm estimating $200 in groceries for this paycheck will have to do it. I typically shop at Trader Joe's, which is affordable, but there are times when I'm too busy with work to go to TJ, and I have to order from Whole Foods online—and that's where the amount usually comes from.
7. I put down $1000 savings a month because I'm fortunate to have a good job, and I never know when hard times will come.
8. I pay around $300 for student loans a month, and this paycheck I put down half for that.
9. The rest of the paycheck is a surplus and it usually goes for subscriptions, shopping, and other miscellaneous spending. You'd be surprised how fast this surplus goes away within days!
I'm trying to be transparent with how I spend my money. Keep in mind that I'm 34 with a college degree, and I've had a series of less than good jobs. And I'm so grateful to be making a good amount of money now where I can live comfortably and take care of my parents. Feel free to ask me anything!
