Updating Raised Garden Beds

🥗 Why: My raised beds I build three years ago couldn’t stand up to the northern Louisiana heat and humidity, and no matter how well I took care of them with protective stain they kept warping and deteriorating. I needed a solution to keep planting for years to come with little to no maintenance.

🥗 Where to buy: After some searching for galvanized steel garden beds, I found these Best Choice Products 4x4x1.5ft Raised Garden Beds! They are gray powder coated steel and come with a rubbed edging for the top lip. They require no tools to assemble, with the wingnuts and bolts included in the shipping container with instructions, and are the perfect modern garden look! Each bed costed me $79/each, so $320 for all 4 beds before tax and shipping.

🥗 Prepping your raised bed location: After digging out the soil from my existing garden beds & disassembling the rotting wood, I cleared the area & laid down a fresh landscape fabric layer on the ground. I then placed the assembled metal beds along where I liked, and adjusted until all were level. You can stake down your beds into place with the provided stakes, but once filled with dirt these aren’t really necessary.

🥗 Fill it up: We used the garden soil we had already to put back into the beds, but if looking to fill from scratch, I would recommend doing a 50:50 mix of compost and garden soil (different than top soil!) to make it the perfect soil for planting your veggies! We love to plant tomatoes 🍅 , onions 🧅 , peppers 🫑, jalapeños 🌶️ , beans 🫛, lettuce 🥬, cucumber 🥒, and more! 🌽🥦🍓🍋🍉🥕
