How do I make this prettier?

I found this desk at a resale store, and I’ve been using it as a work bench In my kitchen.

The whole desk is hard wood, but the work surface is this ugly laminate!

Anyone have any ideas on how I can make it look more interesting? Thanks!

UPDATE: I’m not painting it, ladies. 😭 the wood is very beautiful! It’s also (sadly) not a vintage piece!
