2024 is almost here, and if you haven't hit your Goodreads reading goal, here are some recs of short books/novellas you can read in one sitting that'll help you hit that number! These also work great as palette cleansers between long series, or if you're reading something really heavy and need a quick read to keep the reading slumps at bay!
🍋This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
I've read this novella twice now, and I loved it even more the second time around. This is one where you just have to trust the process. It doesn't really make sense until...it does. And the ending will blow you're mind. It's SO beautiful. The writing can come across as a bit pretentious, but it feels like that's on purpose because of the characters who are writing letters across time. This is a true enemies to lovers story.
🍋Six Scorched Roses by Carissa Broadbent
If you love enemies to lovers, autism rep (not explicitly stated), and vampires, you might love this! I gave this novella 4.75 stars. It's SOOOOOO good, and you can totally read it as a standalone. It's meant to be read between the first and second books in the Crowns of Nyaxia series. It loses a tiny bit because of an IMO awkward spice scene that was totally unnecessary and not even between the love interests. But otherwise, I absolutely loved it!
🍋Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
This was SUCH an interesting little novella. It's possibly the shortest book on this list. And I do wish it was a little more fleshed out, but it's a quick read, the characters are SUPER interesting, the aliens are interesting, and it still tackles some heavy subjects.
🍋Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell
Poetry feeds the soul, and this little compilation has some zingers that will make you feel seen and heard.
🍋All Systems Red by Martha Wells
If you want to laugh, read this book! Murderbot is so snarky and hilarious and I highly recommend the audiobook.
