#DAYINMYLIFE - Dermatology edition

Ever wondered what doctors do on a day-to-day basis? Here’s to demystifying what happens in a typical day in Dermatology!

Derm patients are mainly seen in the outpatient setting, so we run a lotttt of clinics.

👩🏻‍⚕️ CLINICS

- We see a wide range of conditions from skin cancers to atopic dermatitis (eczema) to purely cosmetic concerns like melasma and keloids.

- Clinic sessions mostly focus on educating patients on their diagnosis (this is where patient info leaflets come in handy), ensuring compliance to topical therapy (they get to try the consistencies of our creams and ointments - very much like a Sephora trial corner of sorts, but for moisturisers 😂) and on every review, we monitor their skin condition and titrate the concentration or types of medications accordingly.

- Some quick bedside procedures involve cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) for viral warts/ actinic keratosis/ prurigo nodules etc, and intralesional steroid injections for keloids.

- Skin biopsies are also done if we see a suspicious-looking area and we would want to send some tissue off for testing. It’s a quick bedside procedure that involves local anaesthesia, a few quick punches (think hole-puncher)/ excision, and subsequent stitches.

Perks of the job? We get really smooth skin from trying out so many samples of moisturisers HAHA 😆 and trust us to know the consistencies of the various brands out there.

Honestly being in this posting gives me a bit more work-life balance than other subspecialties ☺️ (just look at how contented Snuffles is when I end work on time and he gets to snuggle up close to me when I’m doing my readings post-work!). Definitely going to miss it when my stint in Derm ends.
