LIFE CHANGING HOTPOT IN TAIPEI?! 🍲

First heard about this place from a friend that it was really good and being avid lovers of food, especially steamboat, made a reservation to try while we were in Taipei!

Reservations spots were tough to get, and they were only left with odd timings but we still went with our 9pm booking and headed to the night market to grab a small bite first so we were a bit filled before heading in. Not the best move BUT they sell in ala-carte portions here so if you want to try it while saving money, it’s maybe the best option.

The staff will mention to you that they serve a porridge at the end of the meal and to make the porridge sweeter, it’s best to get a seafood dish to cook in the soup broth so that you can get the best flavour.

They are also known for their “sea-to-table”, which means damn fresh seafood!

🍲 FOOD

Since we were quite full, we ordered the most basic thing we could get:

• 1 plate of pork shoulder, TWD 1150

• 1 plate of live shrimp, TWD520

• 1 portion of the rice set, TWD60

(Prices as at 2023, may have been adjusted)

The rice set is served with an appetizer and dessert of your choice.

The hotpot also comes with only one soup base, which is konbu, so no wide selection to choose. And it will already come with some vegetables so no need to order additional.

Can I just say how surprised we were to see the prawns still squirming when they arrived at our table? That’s literally how fresh it was, can get any better than that so please order if you’re going!

The meat was also tender and our preferred cut of pork when we go to hotpot places!

💁🏻 SERVICE

Service was so wonderful?! No gimmicks like HDL but so genuine! As shared we were pretty full and wanted to share the rice set but they added one more set for us at no cost 😍

And the way they de-shelled the prawns so skillfully?!? Do you see the tail ends?? This means no waste and really maximising your value!

They also cook the porridge for you to end of the meal and they don’t wait there patiently for the porridge to finish cooking cos it does take a while, but they constantly come in to check on it and serve it up when it’s piping hot and OH MY GOD

THE PORRIDGE!!!!

Please just come for the porridge it’s so good and so simple!

Basically with what’s left in the soup, they’ll add rice to it and wait for it to boil into porridge. Then they add an egg, some spring onions and seaweed to finish it off. That’s it. But the taste was mind blowing that we’ve been trying to recreate it at almost every hotpot place we go to, and even at home but nothing comes as close as this.

Cannot recommend this place enough so please make your reservations at Orange Shabu 1 if you’re heading to Taipei!
