Book Recommendations for Poetry Lovers

Though I'm not incredibly well versed in poetry, I have a particular fondness for long form books written by poets and books that have particularly poetic writing. If you're the same, you won't want to miss these four books!

When We Were Sisters is one of my favorite books of the year. It's a novel from a poet, and it is evident in the beauty of the writing and the way they play with structure. It follows orphaned sisters from a chaotic adolescence into adulthood, and its characters have lingered with me.

Inciting Joy is an essay collection by one of my all time favorite poets. In these essays, he writes about various joys of existence, even amidst heaviness like grief and mental illness. It will give you hope for life, even when that is in short supply.

The Deep is a remarkable novella. It reimagines a world where pregnant enslaved people thrown off of ships turned into generations of mermaids. The audio narration, read by Daveed Diggs, is particularly stunning. I highly recommend!

Lastly, Brown Girls is the type of book I read a library copy of but immediately needed on my shelves. It follows a myriad of brown girls in New York City, weaving their stories and experiences to beautifully illustrate not one character's life, but the shared experiences between them.
