When I got out of high school and didn't need to be awake at 5:30AM anymore, I took full advantage of the fact that my shifts at work started at 4PM, and I'd drag myself out of bed daily around 2 or 3. It was a nice luxury for a bit, but I noticed that I honestly always felt tired, restless, and depressed throughout the days, and I knew I needed to stick to a more natural sleep cycle that aligned with the sun. I started with a goal of waking up every day by 11:30AM- not even being out of bed, but just being awake. It felt so difficult to wake up when there wasn't REALLY anything I had to be up for until late in the day. My first routine was to set 7 different alarms within 3-5 minutes of each other, so that I couldn't let my morning sleepy head call me back into sleep. After I hit my goal of 11:30 regularly, I pushed it back to 10, and then 9, noticing each time how much BETTER I felt throughout the day when I spent more time awake while the sun was up. I felt more refreshed and aligned and at peace. I finally hit my goal this year of waking up at 9am 6 days a week by consistently waking up each day at the same time, instead of only waking up early on weekdays, or on work days. It helped my body to understand when it needed to be up, so when I did wake up, I didn't feel like I was forced, and a lot of the time I actually woke up naturally a few minutes before my alarm. Honestly, I wanted to be up earlier, but knowing myself, I really didn't feel like it was achievable at all for me to wake up any earlier than that. I wanted to be the girl that can wake up with the sun and jump out of bed, but I still relied on an hour of scrolling every morning just to get me alert and ready for the day, and I still felt like I just wasn't a morning person. The one thing that changed my mind was this. Stretching in the mornings in bed. I can stay warm, I can stay cuddled up, I can stay drowsy and comfy and not feel like I have to do a chore first thing in the morning, and I can bring my mind to life in a MUCH more natural way than using my phone to get me up. It takes no time, it makes me feel productive without feeling like a real task, and it makes me feel energized and ready to get into my morning unlike doomscrolling. I've tried every single hack and tip to get out of bed in the morning, and they all just require too much WORK that I am not ready for first thing, but stretching in bed is such a gentle and beautiful way to come to every day, and it's made me genuinely enjoy waking up for literally the first time in my life.
