hello ◡̈
Once my son started moving around more I knew the newborn play mats were just not going to cut it.
I was out shopping and saw this foam mat that could easily fold up and figured it would be great for his room. I laid it out, played with my son on it for about 10 minutes and then left the room. When I went back his entire room smelled like chemicals. I folded the mat back up and put it back in it packaging and then began researching.
I looked into the brand and it was really difficult to find what it was made of. So I looked into what foam play mats are often made out of and found that they are typically made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyurethane, and EVA. All toxic materials.
I returned the play mat and began looking for a new one. In the time being I laid out this quilt we had laying around. As I researched play mats, I just realized that they are so overpriced. I couldn’t make sense of purchasing one when I felt I would only need it for the few months before my son started walking. The quilt was nontoxic and matched his room really well — so I decided to not purchase a mat.
It’s been about a month of using the quilt and I actually really like it. It’s a great clean surface that he can play on. I throw it in the wash once a week. And it’s surprisingly easy to wipe any spit up or drool off of.
If you have an extra comforter laying around, maybe try using that as a play mat! You may be surprised how much you like it! ☺️
