Life of a freelancer in Creative Industry🎨

Since it seems most of you guys are still in university and about to join (me) in the workforce, I thought why not share my 5 years experience as a freelancer/girlboss/business owner based in Singapore.

Quick background about myself:

👵Age: Old (Young at heart twenty something years old)

📚Education: Diploma in Film & Bachelor of Arts (Double Major in Anthropology & Screen and Cultural Studies)

👩‍💻Current Job(s): Art Director, Photographer, Videographer, Producer, Multimedia Designer and others

📍Based in: Sunny Rainy Humid Singapore☀️🇸🇬

🏁Where/How to start?

Start something and share your work to the world. There is no other way to start your journey to be your own boss than to create something/anything and offer them to anyone/everyone. If you like to draw, start drawing and share your work through social media or gift it to someone who loves it. The first step is to make and to share your work.

🥅Define your own goals with a deadline

The next step is crucial. It is very important that you define your goals clearly and set deadlines for those goals. For example, if you want to be the best photographer, what is your definition of the “best photographer”? What are you considering as the qualities of the best photographer? Winning photography awards? Getting your work featured by a certain magazine or publication?

After identifying the goals 🎯which you are going to work towards, you need to set a deadline. By when do you want to achieve this? Or if the goal is huge, you can break it down into a few milestones.

⛔️It is important to stick to deadlines and quit your goal when the deadline is missed. this will give you an opportunity to set up a new goal - pursuing something new.

🗺️Keep exploring even when you are at a good place right now

You never know exactly what will happen next. Even after you find your perfect job, keep doing some exploration. Things change, and whatever you are doing right now might not be the best option for you later in the future.

Having options to choose from allows you to switch to when the time is right. Try new activities, meet new people or read something that you won’t usually touch. Exploration helps to give more tools in your toolbox.

Backup plans are good to have. You never know when those plans are actually better than what we are doing right now.

I choose to be a freelancer because I want to create my own job scope , budget , to-do list and plan my own holidays (among other things). These are qualities that I prioritize in my life and what make me happy❤️

Define your own goals in life and be flexible about the way in which you can achieve them!
