$9 per box for my daughter’s full month box!

In Asian/ Chinese culture, we celebrate a baby’s full month milestone by having a celebration or giving a “full month box” to family and friends. This is an important milestone as it marks the baby’s successful completion of its first month of life, where it’s supposedly the most vulnerable stage of infancy.

Leading up to my daughter’s full month, I searched online for ‘Baby full month boxes’ but most companies have either a minimum spend of a few hundred dollars or the cheaper boxes are really limited in the goodies/ not as aesthetically pleasing. Most decent boxes range from $15-$25 per box.

This was when I decided to DIY my own boxes! After doing some research and sourcing for what’s needed in the box, I realised I could do under $10 for a box, with the right amount of goodies and a pretty packaging.

Each box consists of:

❣️2 Ang ku kueh (symbolises longevity and good luck)

❣️2 red eggs (symbolises fertility, new beginnings and happiness)

❣️2 portions of glutinous rice (symbolises ‘stickiness’ or togetherness in a family)

❣️2 half-sized assorted kuehs (I’ve seen more modern boxes with cupcakes/ cookies and chocolates too)

Here’s the breakdown of how much I spent:

💰Total FOOD cost (for 30 boxes): $186.22

60 ang ku kuehs: $60 ($1 per piece)

60 eggs: $22.32 ($0.37 per egg)

15 boxes glutinous rice: $30 ($2 per box)

30 boxes of kuehs: $69.90

Colouring for the eggs: $4

💰 Total packaging cost (for 30 boxes): $84.40

30 Kraft boxes: $56.00 ($1.86 per box)

2 rolls of ribbons: $20.40

8 pieces of printed greeting cards: $8

✨💰Total cost for 30 boxes: $270.62, which makes each box around $9! ✨💰

Of course the downside of having to DIY is time and labour 😅 We spent a whole morning (about 5 hours) with the help of my sister, parents and husband assembling the boxes and putting it all together.

We treated it as a family activity and we enjoyed it though!
