Hi! I'm Ann & I'm currently a full-time (Year 2) student Early Childhood (ECE) student at SUSS, with a background of an ECE diploma from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. 👶🏻❤️

I know SUSS interviews have been going on and many diploma Year 3 students are asking what it's like to continue in ECE for a degree! (Or, some people are considering to hop into the ECE industry like some of my classmates 😊) I hope this post will be helpful as a rough gauge on what to expect. 💡

I'll be covering...

1) INTERVIEW PROCESS

- What's included

- Tips to prepare

2) WHAT TO KNOW (WHEN YOU'RE ENROLLED)

- Navigating student life

- Module Bidding

- Types of modules you have to take

INTERVIEW PROCESS 🕑

My interview was held in June 2021 and had 4 stages.

• 30-min to write an essay on pre-given topic

• IQ quiz (MCQ)

• Debate (on the pre-given essay topic)

• Discussion (commenting on a child observation video)

The interview process lasted about 2 hours & mine was held online. 😊

💡 Some helpful tips:

Come prepared, be confident & take the initiative to speak up and lead the group of interviewees.

Story ➡️ The panel just threw throw the debate topic & mentioned "You may begin" which honestly startled me & the rest in my interview group a little, hahaha. 🤣 Some people also didn't manage to finish their essay... so plan what to write beforehand!

Discussion: Share insights on what you interpret from the child observation video.

• What do you think was the child's goal?

• What was he doing to achieve that?

• What do you think he/she's learning from what he/she was doing? Was there a failure and how did he/she change his/her actions so they could achieve their goal?

📚 WHAT TO KNOW 📚

1️⃣ SCHOOL SYSTEM (Navigating student life!)

a) SUSS Student Portal 👩‍🎓

- Personal Particulars

- Important deadlines for module bidding/choosing minor 😅

- Module Bidding (under E-services)

- Arranging for textbook couriers (under E-services)

- Check if you met graduation requirements!

b) Canvas

- Assignment Submissions

- Lesson materials (Slides, readings, announcements)

- Discussion Boards (Weekly tasks)

- Community Engagement (CE) opportunities

- Overseas Experience (OE) opportunities

2️⃣ MODULE BIDDING (Ensuring you're enrolled in classes)

Before every semester, you will have to select pre-given modules so you have something to study. (You can also add on other modules if you can cope/have the credits!)

For your first semester, it's not required as you are automatically enrolled. 😊

Once that first semester is over, you have to review the modules you've taken by sharing feedback on the module & lecturers (e-Course Evaluation – ecE) BEFORE you can enrol in your next semester's modules (e-Course Registration – ecR). This is done in the "Student Portal > E-Services > ecE / ecR".

If you don't complete your ecR (aka. choose your modules), you will have nothing to study & therefore no classes that semester... 😅

3️⃣ THE TYPES OF MODULES

I'll introduce the different types of modules. "💬" are examples to help boost your understanding!

a) Major Core

(MUST TAKE cause it's the foundation of your degree)

💬 My major is Early Childhood (ECE) so I have to take ECE modules.

b) Major Electives

(On top of your major core, you need to choose 2 electives related to your degree)

💬 My major is ECE, so I can choose what I want to learn more about in ECE (eg. Music with young children).

c) Core Compulsory

(EVERYONE in SUSS needs to take these regardless of your major)

💬 I am a SUSS student, so I have to take these compulsory modules. My classes can be mixed with students from other degrees.

d) Unrestricted Modules

(Choose ANY modules you want, related to ANYTHING. Don't need to be aligned with your major.)

💬 I am a SUSS student and I have credits where I can go "shopping" for whatever modules I want. I am in ECE but I like art. I will take Western Oil Painting.

This post is getting long so I'll stop here! In Part 2, I will cover the Graduating Requirements 👩‍🎓 and the term/semestral structure for an ECE degree student (Is there attachment/practicum/internship? How long).

I hope this was helpful for you! Feel free to interact if you have anything to ask. 😊❤️
