Had to remove it

Is it a normal thing for a tattoo/piercing shop to use nickel based jewelry? I just got this done and I have 15 other piercings so aftercare is nothing new to me. I went back to the shop and they said that I have to remove it and they gave me a gift certificate for a new piercing with titanium this time since I was “allergic” to nickel. But why would there be such a cheap option used in a shop when they had a good material all along?
