Had my first experience of hiring a driver into JB and here are my thoughts.
Hired a driver to pick us (5 pax) up from 2 locations and drive us into JB , around JB and back to Singapore.
💰 Price: Paid around $350 total for a 7 seater Toyota vellfire. ($70/pax)
✨ We had the driver pick us up from 2 location - Paya Lebar Square and Clementi Mall. Had to top up an extra $15 or so for each location.
Reached woodlands custom at around 10am and was into JB in an hours time from Clementi.
We had the driver drive us to Eco palladium area > Tufting place > Mid valley and out into Singapore at 930PM.
👍🏻 Experience : The seat was super comfortable , wide and spacious. Aircon was strong as well , with nice driver and good music. I wouldn’t have mind being stuck in the car and jam for 3h cause it was really comfortable.
💵 Cost breakdown: if we were to grab in Malaysia instead of hiring a driver (if we were to book a 6 seater car)
1) Trip to Eco Palladium : 98 MYR for
2) Trip to Tufting : 17 MYR
3) Trip to Midvalley : 23 MYR
4) Trip from midvalley back to custom: 37 MYR
Total : 175 MYR (~$10 per pax)
❓ Is it worth it ?
In my opinion , hiring a driver is only worth it if you are travelling in the big group as it is way more comfortable and convenient. Even though we paid $70 per pax , I would say that it was pretty worth.
Taking into account if I were to take a grab from my house to woodlands checkpoint and back , it would have been easily $25 for one way - totalling up to $50. Having said that , taking into consideration queuing for the bus , and custom in heat , I would say I wouldn’t mind pay additional $20 to sit in a spacious and air conditioned car while waiting. This is really a good plan if you have any elderly or older people on the trip with you.
However , if you are traveling in pairs or in trips , I will say that it is definitely not worth it , having to pay close to $100 per pax (if you were to choose a smaller vehicle size). This is because it is much easier to coordinate and plan between 2-3 pax.
However , even though it is a pricey experience , but it was a good one. Personally still feel that for a small group , just opt for train or bus into JB , save the money for massage or some good food. For a huge group (5 or more) , it is definitely good to rent a driver and a huge car!
