I am the daughter of two immigrant parents.
Growing up, I never knew what college was or the “importance” of it.
Although my parents were immigrants (dad came here at 7 mom at 18) they went to college, or at least some sort of extension program at a college but they never mentioned college to me until I was a senior in high school.
Too late, right?
I remember stressing out my whole senior year trying to figure out how to apply to colleges / universities, how to up my GPA (because TBH I was not the brightest in school), trying to figure out FAFSA.
What the heck was my social security number?!
These are things I wish I was introduced to earlier so that I could have a better college experience - and a better life overall.
Fast forward 10 years later: what I learned through everything basically comes down to college/university being a SCAM.
In school, they prep you mentally to want to go to college. Your parents also tell you how important it is. Mine would always say I would go nowhere in life without a proper education, and community college wouldn’t cut it for me.
The glamorization of a piece of paper isn’t worth the hundreds and thousands of dollars you’d probably go in debt with.
I’m 100% sure that if I didn’t go to college, learned a trade or got into doing hair / nails / something people need everyday, I would be stress free and happier.
Not that I’m not happy now.
I teach 1st graders and have been a teacher for 5 years.
I got to experience great learning from my university professors and have fun in film and screenwriting.
But i’m close to a hundred fifty thousand dollars in debt because of it; and that is STRESSFUL.
BUT at the same time, I wouldn’t go back and change my path because through all of that, it is how I met my fiancé and we had a beautiful baby girl.
