These are my top picks for middle grades based solely on my own personal preferences.
Context: I like books that are immersive but tackle tough/ darker subjects. I also really love realistic role models and inspirational stories.
👻 Boy is unalived by a cop and comes back as a ghost as he tries to understand what happened.
🐈⬛ Boy deals with homelessness and starts seeing his childhood imaginary friend again.
⚡️Everything great about Harry Potter but the main character is Hermione with much cooler powers, BIPOC, not transphobic, and not racist. 6 out 5 Stars. An all time favorite even as an adult!
🔭 Girl Scout to Space, this book is so impactful and empowering to young teens who have to face a lot of obstacles or are really into learning more about space and the influential people in the field.
🌉 I used to trick all my students into reading this book by telling them I read it at their age and cried. Only ever had 1 student not like the book, but he still read the whole thing. I take that as a win!
📼 The book is somehow lighter than the show and is actually super good. I can’t find the original cover anymore!
🧠 Teen goes to mental health hospital where he meets a girl that changes how he sees life and learns about himself.
⚽️ All about her life and focus on growing up in less than ideal circumstances before becoming a soccer legend.
✏️ Introduction into Malala in a fun way where she relates the impact on women’s education to a magical pencil from her favorite childhood tv show.
