Have you seen teal colored pumpkins like this one around?!
They stand to represent accommodations so kids with dietary restrictions or food allergies can safely trick-or-treat with their peers! Started in 2014 by a family in Tennessee, the teal pumpkin is a sign to trick or treaters that your home offers non food items on halloween. Since, teal has taken over the porches of homes all across the world to make fall festivities inclusive and accessible for all.
Why is this important? Well, with over 33 million Americans with food allergies, non food items ensure that those who can't have normal candy can still receive a treat.
Anaphylaxis, a type of food allergy reaction that can occur, can be life threatening and has taken far too many lives. It continues to impact families all over the globe. The teal pumpkin project is a way to not only help kids feel included and seen, but also to reduce the risk of reactions from candies containing allergens and offer support to families facing these challenges.
Want to be a part? Only 2 things are required, with an optional 3rd step!
1) Have a teal pumpkin on your porch!
-These can be painted yourself or
purchased for just a few dollars from
your local CVS or Target, to
name just 2 of many participating
stores!
-This doesn’t mean you can’t have
regular candy as well. It just means
that you will have non-food
treats to offer.
2) Have non-food treat items!
-This can include bouncy balls,
bubbles, stickers, pens, coloring
books, glow sticks, and more!
-Stores like CVS and Target have
items in store this season specifically
for that purpose.
3) (Optional) Register your home on the
FARE (Food Allergy Research and
Education) website so when
families look at the map, they will know
you have options that are safe and
inclusive for all!
Seasonal festivities shouldn’t be scary. The teal pumpkin can help! Happy Fall Y’all!
