How to Propagate Spider Plants in Water

The water method of propagating spider plants allows you to develop the plant's roots first, then plant it with already established roots into the soil. If rooted in water, roots will form within seven to 10 days. One disadvantage of water-grown roots is they can be weak and must later acclimate to the soil. The most significant advantage of this method is that it's fast.

1. Fill Your Jar With Water

Gather a clean, clear jar and fill it with water.

Let the water sit for an hour to de-chlorinate and come to room temperature.

2. Gather Your Cuttings

Use alcohol to sterilize the blade of a tool, such as clippers, a sharp knife, or flower snippers.

Remove the spiderettes carefully from the stolon of the mother plant by cutting right along its base.

Do not worry about cutting or removing the stolon. However, if you retain it, more spiderettes will eventually form from the stolon.

3. Add Cutting to Jar

Place the new cutting into the water just deep enough to cover the very bottom of the spiderette.

Do not let leaves touch the water; reposition the plant if necessary.

4. Place in Sunlight

Put the container in indirect sunlight and wait.

Change the water when it gets cloudy and wait for roots to develop.

Remove the new spider plant from the water when you have a good grouping of roots.
