Black Cake: Book Review 📚

I started this book while I was going on vacation in the Caribbean so it was pretty surreal when the author described the beaches and the ocean. Initially, I took interest in this book because I saw it was coming out as a Hulu series. I usually prefer to read the book before watching the show/film and I don’t think I’ll regret it (I’ll probably watch the show soon).

The premise of the book is that two estranged siblings, Byron and Benny, are brought back together with the passing of their mother. Their mother left them a traditional Caribbean dessert, black cake, and a voice recording that reveals several family secrets that are unraveled over the course of the book. We also discover more secrets that the children and other pertinent characters were hiding that are all weaved into the narrative. I always love books like this because I love how intricate everything must be to come together in a family-based narrative, but these books always take a while for me to read because family issues can be a little heavy for me. Regardless I still enjoyed the book enough, I just wish it could have been a little shorter. I’m happy to watch the series and see how this plays out on the screen.
