Learning how to crochet without a pattern CAN be hard at first but it gets much easier with practice. Here are my top tips for freehand crocheting:

🧶 Practice your basic crochet skills before jumping into freehand. Patterns and tutorials are great for learning construction.

🧶 Learn how to crochet basic shapes, circle, square, triangle, rectangle. With learning these shapes you’ll learn increasing and decreasing, and you’ll find that most items are just a bunch of shapes put together.

🧶 Crochet to measurement. I found that not worrying about the numbers and “crochet math” made it much easier to build an item.

🧶 BASIC STITCHES! Don’t start with complicated stitches when first learning how to freehand. I think this is where a lot of people go wrong and feel like they can’t do it. Use simple stitches like dc, hc, sc at first. Trying to integrate fancy stitches in the beginning of your freehand journey is just going to cause more confusion. Master the art of building your items and I promise you’ll be able to switch up the stitches with no problem later.
