over Father’s Day weekend, my sister and I put tgt a super easy Japanese dinner!!
Honestly, everything came from a box, we barely did any work hahahah I bought this super chewy and yummy udon from Isetan a few weeks ago, so I was so happy we finally got to eat it!
The udon dipping sauce also came from a bottle… the gyozas came from a packet… the sashimi came from Don Don donki…. HAHA the only thing we really made was the gyoza skirt (aKA the crispy portion). Ok fine I didn’t make it, my sister did 🤡
I… contributed by cooking the udon…. 🥲
Anyway the skirt is so easy to make, and is a lot less daunting than you’d think. We didn’t use legit gyozas because the supermarket nearby didn’t sell… so we got these rando Chinese dumplings that were still very very yummy!
I love gyoza skirts because they add such a nice textural contrast to the gyozas! Plus it’s salty and crispy…. What’s there not to like? It’s like eating chips with your gyozas lmao
Recipe (adapted from healthy nibbles):
1) in a bowl, add 1/3 cup water, 2.5 tsp all purpose flour, 2 tbsp of a neutral oil and a pinch of salt
2) stir it all up until well combined (this is called a slurry)
3) over medium heat, add oil into a pan
4) fry dumplings for about 4-5 mins until the bottoms are golden brown
5) pour your well mixed slurry into the gaps on the pan to form the skirt
6) cover w a lid and let cook for about 6 more mins
7) open the lid and once the skirt is crisp and golden brown, turn it over onto a plate!
Enjoy!
