Whenever we’re outside, I like to do quick check-ins with Ace and Mazie by asking them to look at me. It’s one of the most basic commands they’ve learned, and it’s essential for any dog when you’re out and about. Teaching this command helps keep them safe, focused, and responsive, even in distracting environments. Whether it’s an approaching dog, a passing car, or just an intriguing new scent, that quick connection ensures they know it’s time to pay attention.

Why is it important?

Teaching your dog to make eye contact on command builds trust and communication. It’s especially useful in busy settings, helping them stay calm and focused when it matters most. If your dog know the command well but isn’t responding in a certain situation, it could mean the environment is too stimulating, and you might need to keep them on a shorter leash or remove them from the situation altogether. And then you’ll also know what you’ll need to work on more in the future!

How to train “look at me”:

1. Start in a calm setting: Get your dog’s attention by holding a treat near your face.

2. Reward eye contact: As soon as they make eye contact, praise them and give them the treat.

3. Lure with hand: Once they start consistently looking at you with the treat, switch to luring them to look at you with your finger, and reward them with a treat once they make eye contact.

4. Add a verbal command: It could be “look at me,” “watch,” “eyes on me,” or whatever works for you.

5. Practice with distractions: Once they’ve mastered it at home, try it outside. Gradually introduce distractions to strengthen their focus.

6. Keep it consistent: Regular practice will make this command second nature!

As always, consistency, patience, and lots of treats are the key! 🐾
