Planning a road trip with your furry friends this holiday season? 🚗🐾

(Next time we’ll talk about taking your dogs on a flight ✈️ Follow for more!)

Ace, Mazie and I have done our share of road trips, and while it’s always an adventure, there are definitely some things to keep in mind to make sure everyone stays comfortable and happy! Here are my top tips:

1. Plan Frequent Potty Breaks 🐕🚶‍♂️

Dogs need plenty of opportunities to stretch their legs. We plan breaks every 3-4 hours for potty, water, and a quick walk at the gas station to let them stretch their legs and keep them comfortable.

2. Exercise Before a Long Drive 🏃‍♀️🐾

Before we hit the road, I make sure Ace and Mazie get a good workout—whether it’s a hike, a game of fetch, or a long walk. Wearing them out before a road trip helps them settle down and happily nap through most of the drive.

3. Pack the Essentials 🎒🐾

I never leave without plenty of water, collapsible bowls, poop bags, and Ace and Mazie’s favorite toys. If your dogs get restless, bring a good chew that will last a while or try CBD treats to keep them calm. Ace and Mazie love having something to keep them busy, and enrichment toys are great for long stretches in the car.

4. Safety First! 🚦🐾

We use a hammock in the back seat to keep Ace and Mazie comfortable while staying in one place. Please don’t let your dogs roam free in the car or stick their heads out the window untethered! Seatbelt harnesses are great for keeping dogs secure during the ride.

5. Make it Comfortable 🛋️💤

A cozy setup is a must. I love knowing how Ace and Mazie prefer their space: Ace always sticks his Auss up to the AC to hog all the cold air, and Mazie loves her little corner where she naps—unless she’s begging for pets. Know what makes your dogs comfortable and provide it to keep them happy!

6. Dog-Friendly Stops 🐾🌳

If you’re planning a super duper long drive, like a cross-country adventure, make sure to research dog-friendly stops along the way. When we drove from Atlanta to San Diego, we planned stops at dog-friendly trails and parks to make the journey fun for Ace and Mazie. It keeps them from getting bored and makes the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Road trips with dogs take a bit of planning, but it’s SOOO worth it to enjoy the journey knowing you’re not leaving your best friends behind! Have you ever taken your dogs on a road trip? What are your go-to tips? 🐾💛
