i recently spent summer in greece and we started off the trip in athens, before heading to the cyclade islands!

🏠 when in athens hostel

for the duration of our trip in athens, we stayed in when in athens and i cannot recommend it enough! it was extremely clean, centrally-located with reasonable prices and well-organised pub crawls. i hadn’t stayed in too many hostels before, but this def takes the cake. it genuinely felt like a proper hotel, if you excuse the fact that the bathroom and room is shared.

📆 day 1

• free athens walking tour (https://www.athens-free-tour.com/)

(we always try to go on walking tours if we can fit it in our itinerary, because it’s a great way to learn about the city and its history in-depth from a qualified guide. It’s also way more inexpensive than other guided tours, so please rmbr to still tip your gratuity to the guides!)

• dinner @ o thanasis

(located in the center of plaka in monstiraki st, this restaurant was awarded 42nd best restaurant in the world in the taste atlas list. it def serves amazing souvlaki and is slightly pricier, but tbh i probably wouldn’t go back there specifically because any random greek shop off the streets serves pretty good fare anyway)

• cine thisio (https://cine-thisio.gr/en/)

(this is one of the many beautiful open-air cinemas in athens and you can enjoy a picturesque view of the acropolis while watching a late-night movie)

📆 day 2

• acropolis of athens (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/404/)

(the highlight of athens and a unesco heritage site, the athens acropolis is def formidable and a worthy visit. i’ve been to the roman acropolis, and prefer this one 100000x over. it’s also extremely affordable, with a price tag of only €10 if you’re under 25 years old. do note that the tickets have timed entry for the acropolis itself, and the slopes of acropolis which is all the way inside. please also just buy your tickets directly at the front desk instead of online, which was what we did and we nearly got scammed. it literally won’t take you more than 5 minutes since the queue is so quick. i’ll def be back the next time i’m in athens!)

• roman agora -> hadrian’s library

(we didn’t purchase admission tickets as we were quite tired from our time at the acropolis + you can view about 70% from outside)

• agora flea market

(this is essentially a souvenir shopping st and worth a wander, since it’s so centrally located anyway)

• cine paris (https://www.cineparis.gr/)

(i am equally confused as to why it’s namesake is paris, instead of athens … this is much smaller than cine thisio, but it’s also structured more romantically imo)

📆 day 3

our ferry left super early, so our 3rd day in athens was practically non-existent. but i would say 2 full days in athens is more or less perfect!
