Listen, we could all learn a thing or two from fiction. It’s true. Sometimes, you just need a little inspiration from it to implement in your real life. Whether it’s fashion, new perspectives, or ideas, we’ve all taken something away from our favorite pieces of fiction.

These are the characters that I’ve read and watched that help motivate me to be a better academic. Their passion and pursuit of knowledge really get me in the study spirit. Here they are:

George Karim/Cubbins: What a damn legend. One of my favorite characters from Jonathan Stroud’s Lockwood & Co. books and tv adaptation. He’s extremely caustic, but so dedicated to his craft. As the company’s researcher, he spends long hours digging centuries worth of information to solve cases, protect his team, and advance the knowledge of the world around him. Plus, I feel like we have a disparity in characters of color that are the standard to look up to academics wise in fiction.

Merlin: This Merlin, courtesy of K.M. Shea’s King Arthur and Her Nights, is a devious politician. Devastatingly skilled in magic, sure. But he’d rather be in power through acts of intelligence than brute strength. Even when wrenches are thrown into his plans, he adapts and betters himself in spite of what the world throws at him.

Jo March: She’s an icon. To be so dedicated in the face of societal pressures and prejudices is no small feat. Sure, it’s easier now, but at that period in history? She was brave to dream outside of her corner of the world, all while remaining true to herself and values.

Daniel Arlington: I aim to be so educated one day, just so I can sound like Darlington when I speak. He might be a bit of a snob, but he’s endlessly thirsty for knowledge. And he’s the kind of old, poetic soul a lot of us want to secretly be. Leigh Bardugo wrote this guy with the restless dreamers in mind.

Elle Woods: I want to be like Elle Woods, not because of her personality or intelligence, but because of her will to do things for herself. It’s something that she learns throughout her character arc, and uses to its fullest extent. I hope that I can be more proactive like her in my own life.
