it’s taken me a while to actually “master” wash day since having locs but I think I’ve finally got the remedy right.
over the years, I learned that using the right cleanser is super important.
🫸🏾 I don’t use shampoos OR conditioners because most contain sulfates which contribute to buildup.
👏🏾 I use castile soap as my main cleanser which is vegetable oil based and contains 0 sulfates.
we have to remember that loc fibers are much thicker and denser than other hair types so knowing how to treat/clean them accordingly is vital.
my 🔟 successful wash day secrets:
📝 submerge my hair with water for at least 5 minutes:
warm water opens up your hair pores and allows the product to work better. so I fully wet my hair before washing it so my cuticles are open and ready for a good wash.
📝 apply soap directly to my scalp/roots:
I honestly do this so I don’t waste soap. I feel like when I apply it this way, I get a full coverage and it lathers better. I only use Castile soap on my scalp/roots.
📝 apply soap directly to my locs:
I scrub the shafts of my locs separately from my roots and scalp as it requires more scrubbing effort.
I use biobased soap for this part to make sure all buildup is removed from the shafts.
📝 wash-rinse-repeat 2-3x:
I do the washing process 2-3x depending on how dirty I feel my hair is for that wash day. extra clean locs are extra happy locs.
📝❗️squeeze/ring/shake out excess water:
having excess water in my locs after washing makes the drying process longer and it’s an invitation for mildew. yes, wet locs are more prone to mildew and buildup. so I take my time and squeeeeeze and riiiiing out as much excess water as possible. I also do the “rock star” or “Waka Flocka” head shake hard and it helps 😅
📝 apply Aloe Oil and aloe/sea moss mask:
I apply oil to my scalp then massage it in. then I add my aloe/sea moss mask to my scalp and roots and massage that in. locs and aloe go hand in hand and my mask doesn’t cause any buildup.
📝 air dry:
I always let my hair air dry until completely dry. it could take 8-10 hours to dry completely. starting my wash day before the sun rises is usually my goal.
📝 no coverings or heat - EVER:
I don’t ever dry my hair with a towel anymore. no cotton fabrics touch it. I don’t use bonnets when it’s wet. I feel like this slows down the drying process and keeps water in longer which invites mildew. I don’t use any heat because it’s too damaging.
📝 not sleeping on wet hair:
I REALLY try not to go to sleep on wet hair! I feel like when I do, my hair doesn’t dry at all when I wake up and it smells bad. I wash my hair early in the morning so I know it’ll be at least 90% dry before going to sleep.
📝 optional - retwist when wet:
to me, retwisting after a fresh wash is when my retwists turn out thee absolute best. it’s easier to do when wet and lasts longer!
