hey all!! iβm currently entering my final year of polytechnic and since school is starting, here is what to expect when entering poly cause i feel like no one told me this and i had to figure all these out myself ππ
so here are stuff that i wish people told me when i first entered!
1. making friends π―ββοΈ
this was honestly one of my biggest fearβ¦ not having friends. but thankfully i did manage to find an amazing group of friends that were in my class π₯° it took me q long to open up to them or even just talk to them honestly cause i was suuuper introverted and only talked to the people in my class when needed. other wise iβll just sit in class and play my phone π±
it took me close to 5 months (Y1S2) to find a trustable group of friends and iβm super thankful for them π₯²
2. group projects π
there are some schools π« that allow you to choose your own groupings but for mine, sadly they donβt allow for most of my modules so iβm stuck with whatever my lecturer put me withβ¦ iβve grouped with a few slackers π‘ and it is NOT fun at all. it was super stressful esp knowing that your grade depends on this!!
3. join ccas!! πΈ
it was one of my best decisions to join a cca as that is whr i made all my friends from, outside of my class. honestly, when are u gg to make friends from outside your class other than joining ccas. i guess from freshmen orientation camps and thatβs it. but for my year we didnβt have it due to covid π¦ but iβm pretty thankful as iβm an introvert and that will do me no good π π
itβs rly important to join the right cca as well as some cca are quite toxic but to each their own! iβd recommend you to join with a friend to check out their culture or u can also ask around to see how their culture is like. personally for me, iβve heard that student initiated clubs are usually toxic but! itβs from what iβve heard so i may be wrong too!!
4. fast paced π¨
poly passes rllly quickly. like super. once you start school, in 5 weeks, 1 week study break, exams, and holiday. next term, around 1.5 months school π«, 2 week exam, 2 months holiday and youβre done with your first year. itβs rly fast paced and itβs important to be consistent and pace yourself during school days.
i honestly find myself studying almost everyday and every weekend just to catch up with what iβve learnt and honestly, i still feel like itβs not enough. iβm gg into y3 and iβm still not used to how fast it is. same for my friends. weβre constantly saying how we just started school a few weeks ago and exams have begun again. it rly feels like hell esp closer to submission/exams but u can enjoy yourself after thatβs done!
i would say poly gives you a lot more freedom but at the same time itβs how well you manage your time π°οΈ
here are some places i always study at!
5. doing your best βπΌ
i always strive to do my best ESP knowing that iβll only be touching that module for around 5 months. but depending on your course! for mine, every sem we change module so after every semester, i can forget about whatever iβve learnt and enjoy my holidays properly!!
so thatβs honestly my motivation, just cramping all that information into my head and i can forget about it forever (unless u wanna continue studying π that in the future)
6. everything for yourself ππ»ββοΈ
ok not everything but most. if u need that extra credit, do it. class participation plays a role in classes and even though you donβt see it, the lecturers knows who is paying attention and who is not so pay attention! iβm guilty of not soβ¦ I WILL START THIS YEAR.
7. ask questions ππ»ββοΈ
i constantly find myself asking questions when i pay attention.. which is rarely but it rly helps me! i ask a lot esp during consultations. bother your lecturers. they are paid to entertain you. ask for consultation but prepare your questions in advance because that is the time whr u are the one talking mostly, asking questions. not the lecturer testing you what youβve learnt.
i actly met my lecturer 3 times outside of class time prior to the exam and i scored super well for the paper!! even my lecturer was shocked himself cause he didnβt think that ME ASKING 3 times would be a good sign ππ but i mugged hard after understanding what he taught me!
8. fashion showπ§£
in poly, u can wear whatever u want. youβre not rly restricted most of the time. so WEAR WHATEVER U WANT. dress up, look nice, have photo shoots in school. you can even match with your friends if one day you find yourself not knowing what to wear. thatβs what i always do π€£π€£
but over the months, iβve became lazy and just started to throw on an oversized tee and shorts and just head to school. but itβs still fun for the first few months and sometimes once a month iβll wear nice to school π
βοΈ overall
poly is fun! if you know how to manage your time and enjoy it. no matter what school or course youβre in, iβm sure you find friends someway somehow! dun have to be a lot too! quality > quantity! and rmb to not keep mugging but have a balanced between doing work and having fun!
