If you haven’t read part 1, go check that out first!

It’s now 5 am on day 2 and we’re at the lobby of our lodge waiting for the shuttle bus to bring us to the sunrise viewpoint- but we were told that no, there were no shuttle buses running before sunrise (even though the receptionist the night before said there might be) and so we were left stranded a little too far from the sunrise spot.

🌄 Yavapai Point

But we were not going to let that take the experience away from us! So we started brisk walking towards our destination in the 10-degree cold, running to keep warm- and we made it in the nick of time to see one of the most spectacular sunrises ever! Watching the sun slowly light up the depths of the canyon, you truly understand the magnitude, the scale of the grand canyon - as far as the eye could see - a gorge in the ground dug grain by grain by a trickle of water over millions of years. Truly a wonder.

With the sun up, we headed back to our lodge to remove the extra layers of clothes, it was no longer needed as it was about to get really hot!

⛰️Bright Angel Trailhead

We started the hike down from the rim of the canyon and boy was it a workout! We weren’t expecting to make it to the bottom - that would take us a whole day, but even till the halfway point, we had to stop multiple times to catch our breaths. Going up was even harder- but it was worth it (you had no other choice). You don’t really understand the scale of the canyon until you actually try to traverse it. After hours of climbing, we were nowhere near the halfway point, and the canyon was already towering way above us. Humbling.

🌃 Grand Canyon Village

After the climb, we headed over to the Historic Village of Grand Canyon, where the first colonial settlements set up base camp, and where we learned a little more about the area and the native Americans who used to reside here.

Unfortunately, after this, we had to leave to head down to Los Angeles, which was the start of the next leg of our journey! To do so, we took a bus out to Flagstaff, the nearest big city, where we then took an overnight Amtrak train back to Los Angeles!

Check out my Los Angeles guide to see how I spent 5 days in Los Angeles!
