1. Do you want children?

This is SO important to talk about, even if it seems far in the future. If you want kids and it is a nonnegotiable for you, you should not marry someone who doesn’t want kids. If you don’t think you want kids, you shouldn’t marry someone who has their sights set on having kids in the future.

2. What are your financial goals?

Finances are one of the biggest reasons for conflict in a relationship. Your financial goals and habits must line up. If you feel very strongly about putting your money in a savings or stock account for reasons such as retirement or paying for your kids’ college, you need to make sure your partner agrees with that. If you will get very very annoyed at your partner’s spending habits, you need to solve that issue before getting married. Make sure you have the same goals in life!

3. Why do you want to get married? What does marriage mean to you?

Marriage can mean different things to different people, and that is perfectly fine! Your ideas of marriage don’t even need to perfectly line up. You just want to make sure you discuss that so you know what to expect, and make sure you are okay with their answer!

4. What are your core values?

What are your non-negotiables? What values do you need in a partner? Again, they don’t have to be exactly the same but you have to make sure you like their answer and believe they will balance/compliment each other. For example, if your core value is openness and honesty, and your partner values their privacy and being able to have your own things separate, think about how that could work together and if it could be an issue.

5. How important is religion?

Super important to talk about as well. You are definitely allowed to have different religions and make it work, as long as you are both okay with that. If it is very important to you that your family to go to church, but your partner isn’t comfortable with that, that will be an issue. If you do practice different religions, how will you raise your kids when it comes to religion?

6. Do you have any debt?

Debt is okay and pretty common nowadays with college loans, etc. Just make sure you both know about all the debt you have accumulated and are prepared to pay that off for however long it takes as a married couple.
