A must have or a white elephant?💭Vanity Area💄👸🏻✨

If you are renovating your home, you might be considering having a dedicated area for vanity 💄 After all, it feels nice to have a proper space to do your hair/makeup/skincare everyday. In our case however, we decided not to allocate a space for one!

💭 Here are a few reasons why we decided not to have a vanity area at home ❌

1. Vanity area takes up a lot of space 📦

At the very least, a vanity area would take around 1m x 1m of space - which is quite a lot especially since HDB rooms are quite small. By not having a vanity area, we now have more space to walk around and the room doesn't feel as cramped.

2. Vanity area will only be used by one person 🙋🏻‍♀️

Since the vanity area will only be used by me, it doesn't make sense to dedicate an entire space just for this purpose. We feel that a vanity area won't get its deserved mileage as not everyone will be using it.

3. My skincare/makeup routine is pretty simple 🕛

My daily routine only takes around 5-10 mins max, that I can do quickly while standing. This doesn't tire me to the point that I need to sit down and appreciate a proper vanity area. If your routine is longer though, a vanity area will be nice to have.

4. Building a vanity area means extra reno cost 💸

Integrating a vanity area properly into the home design might mean extra cost for carpentry. This is not a cost we are willing to pay, especially since we know we won't be using the area much.

✨Instead of a dedicated vanity area, here's how I have my space set up:

1. A standing mirror where I can see myself from head to toe (also functions as a decor element in the room)

2. A mini stool to sit on if I feel tired and can also be used as a table to place makeup and skincare (also functions as a decor piece)

3. A dedicated shelf in the clothes cabinet to store makeup and skincare

Tip : get a mini organiser to store your items so you can find things easily 🔎

So far, 100% no regrets! We're glad we are able to save on reno by not opting for a space we won't use much. A vanity area is usually added in as one of the must-haves when you go consult different reno firms, but don't feel pressured to go for one if you don't think you will need it. At the end of the day, a home should be tailored to your needs and not just a checklist to follow.
