Looking for some spooky haunted places to visit in honor of spooky season? Then head to the Heceta Head Lighthouse located in Florence, Oregon!

The house is rumored to be haunted by a ghost named Rue. Rue is said to be a gray haired lady wearing a Victorian Era dress. It is theorized that “Rue” was a wife of a keeper who had two daughters. One of her daughters had drowned and died at the lighthouse. Rue comes back to the lighthouse to continue looking for her daughter. She is a friendly ghost who has never caused any harm to guests.

Here are some stories and encounters with Rue:

• In 1975, a worker named Jim Anderson was cleaning a window in the attic when he noticed something strange in the reflection of the window. He turned to see what the strange figure behind him was. It was an apparition of a woman in a Victorian style dress. Anderson was horrified and wouldn’t return to the house for several days. When he did, he refused to step foot in the attic again. Anderson accidentally broke the window while working, and fixed the window only from the outside. That same night, after Anderson fixed the window, the housekeepers reported hearing scraping sounds in the attic. When they went upstairs to see what the noise was, there was a pile of broken glass in a tidy pile next to the window. It’s rumored to of been Rue cleaning up after Anderson.

•A guest reported seeing a figure floating in a hallway toward the base of the stairs.

•Carol Henderson was a guest who stayed in the house. She reported her experiences in the Inn’s book of ghost stories. She reported waking up at 4 AM to the presence of someone in the bed with her. She said the presence was there for hours.

•There have been reports of items in rooms being moved around unexplainably. Also items going missing, and returning hours later.

•Beth Mozzachio is a housekeeper at the house. She stated that sometimes when she makes beds there will be a depression quickly after, as if someone just sat down. She thinks Rue likes her for taking care of the place.

Some History! ⬇️

The lighthouse started to be used in 1894. Housing many keepers and families throughout the years. The last time a keeper lived here was 1963, when the lighthouse was switched to automatic. It also was used as military barracks during World War 2. It was registered as a historic site in 1978. It since has been opened to the public for tours and you can even spend the night in one of the three guest rooms.

Heceta Head is a stunning place with a 56 foot tall lighthouse. Plus beautiful ocean views. Definitely worth a visit, and look out for Rue!
