Working and gaining experience for a few years has made me taught me several things about working life. These are the lessons I will bring into my 30s:

☝🏼No job is JUST a job

Though you might take on a job “temporarily” as a stepping stone or to gain experience, it is still something that you will spend the bulk of your waking hours doing (5 days x 9 hours)!!!

✌🏼LEAVE if your job sucks for you

A job may be perfect for someone else, but may not fit you. If you find that a job is not compatible with your personality, habits and working style, and changing your work situation (e.g. by changing team, trying to reframe your perspective, trying new strategies) is not working, it may be time to leave. Some things just don’t get better over time if the fundamental fit is just not there!

👌🏼 Job fit is everything!!!

When searching for a new job, make sure the job fits you! It might be tempting to think that you can sacrifice “for a while”, but if the job is not suitable you’ll just end up looking for another one again. Avoid this by finding a job that fits you in the first place!

Ultimately, whether we like it or not, as working adults our jobs are where we spend much of our waking hours at. Building a good career is a marathon, not a race - this means that we need to find a job with a good fit by making sure that it fits our skills and personalities, and make sure that our work life is healthy and sustainable in the long run.

Of course, everyone has different priorities when it comes to choosing their job, whether its to earn money or do something meaningful or fun. Its great to hustle hard and grow as much as possible, but I’ve learnt that trying to do it all can hurt my physical and mental health. Now, I think more carefully about my strengths, preferences and how I contribute best, and I think it has helped me be happier and more productive. Let me know your thoughts on how you approach your career! 🫶🏼
