๐ธ๐ธ๐ธ
in honor of Mental Health Week โบ๏ธ, i would like to share an article my counselor recently passed along to me. it explores why we often find ourselves fixating on the negative aspects of life, a habit many of us unknowingly share ๐ญ
do you tend to dwell on the negative things, like criticism, more than positive feedback๐คจ? are snarky comments from friends something you can't easily forget? if this is you, read on! maybe you will find this relatable or not hahaha ๐คฃ
๐ธ humans possess a natural inclination known as the "negativity bias." this means we give more weight to things that go wrong than to those that go right.
๐ธ i found that this is something quite relatable to me and i didnโt see it in myself only recently.
๐ธ the example given in the article was that imagine you have a jar, and in one scenario, every time you get something right, you add a marble to it โ . In another scenario, you have a jar full of marbles, and every time you get something wrong, one marble is taken away ๐ญ. even though the motivation is the same (one marble per question), the feeling of losing a marble is somehow more profound than earning one. i would think that this might not be as relatable now in the context of marbles especially but it definitely did when we are younger๐๐. i swear i would have bawled my eyes out ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
๐ธ this negativity bias can be linked to our primal instinct for survival. by being more attuned to negative aspects, we naturally pay greater attention to potential dangers, as this is a way our brains strive to keep us safe. in the marble scenario, the act of taking away a marble feels like a threat, leading us to feel somewhat threatened by someone taking away what is originally ours ๐ฅบ
๐ธ but!! focusing on negativity is also a way to learn. studies show that negative feedback stimulates learning more swiftly than positive feedback. the fear of receiving negative feedback drives us to focus on it, preparing ourselves to avoid making the same mistakes and thereby avoiding that negative feeling.
๐ธ overall, it's okay to focus on negativity as long as it doesn't negatively impact your work, friendships, relationships, or, most importantly, your well-being โ โ โ โ โ . If it helps you grow and improve, that's great!
๐ธ however if you find yourself drowning in negativity, here are some tips to overcome it:
๐ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐๐: take time to appreciate the positive aspects of life! maybe you can consider a gratitude diary ๐
๐ ๐๐ง๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ฆ๐ช๐๐จ: take a deep breathe ๐งโโ๏ธ and list 5๏ธโฃ things you can see, 4๏ธโฃ things you can hear, 3๏ธโฃ things you can feel, 2๏ธโฃ things you can smell, and 1๏ธโฃ thing you can taste.
๐ ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐จ ๐ฎ๐ค๐ช ๐ก๐ค๐ซ๐: whether it's cooking, exercising, or any other hobby.
๐ ๐๐๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐ฎ๐ค๐ช๐ง ๐ก๐ค๐ซ๐๐ ๐ค๐ฃ๐๐จ: let them know how you're feeling.
i hope i havenโt gone off topic HAHAHABAB but maybe i did ๐คก๐คก
hope this read has been useful in some way or another ๐ซถ๐ผ๐ซถ๐ผ
LOL! (love our loud ๐๐ธ)
