This Is Me Un-Romanticizing Solo Traveling For You

full disclaimer: i am 100% *FOR* solo travelling.

out of the 36 trips that i took in the last 10 years, 31 were done solo, and i have loved every single one of them. so this post is not to talk anyone *OUT* of solo travelling but rather, to ground ur expectations in the realities of it so that u can be properly prepared and fully appreciate the experience for what it truly is when u finally go on ur own solo trip. bcos, for what it’s worth, do u want to know what i feel is the biggest mistake ppl make about solo travelling?

they romanticize it.

yes. they throw on all the rose-tinted glasses they can find, and they romanticize it. they think that this is going to be *their* moment to shine and self-discover and grow and heal and all that affirmation bs but like no gurrlllllll put all that eatpraylove shit down for a second and just FOCUS

FOR A MINUTE

solo travelling is hard enough as it is. don’t make it even harder by turning it into something that it’s not. when u romanticize solo travel, u run the risk of falling in love with THE IDEA of solo travelling than the actual journey itself - and u will only end up setting expectations that do nothing but disappoint u.

so DON’T ROMANTICISE IT. travelling on ur own *can be* a beautiful thing, but it’s also raw and it's grimy and it's filled with lots of hard knocks and whiplashes and all the tough stuff along the way (how else do u think all that *growth & self-discovery* happens lolll). so dont rob urself of the ACTUAL wonderful things that solo travel can bring to u, by idealizing the wrong side of reality. make sure you know what solo travel means and fully entails before u do it- and perhaps then and only then, solo travelling will reveal its romantic side unto you when you least expect it, in ways you never imagined.

𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦

✨ solo travelling is not for everyone. don’t shoot the messenger, it really isn’t. and this is mainly because…

✨ u have to be strong enough to be ur own support system. so if u do a quick self-inventory check and realise that u tend to be heavily reliant on others for mental, physical, and emotional support, or if ure prone to really bad anxiety or panic attacks when things get messy, then this might not be the right time yet for u to take that solo trip.

✨ that said, just bcos ure not ready for it today, doesn’t mean u will never be ready for it forever. thankfully for all of us, solo travelling is not a talent, it’s an endurance sport – so all u have to do is build urself up for it. learn to be comfortable by urself and start small by going on solo dates, or taking trips as a part of an organized tour group, alone. get comfortable with making decisions on ur own. exercise independent thought. learn and understand the real difference btw being alone and being lonely, and with enough time and determination, i m sure u will find urself more ready to be out there on ur own than uve ever been..
