why I like to drink my coffee black

“Even if the world freezes over, Koreans will still drink iced Americano” is a saying I’ve seen multiple times on social media. (I can confirm this, having been a Starbucks barista at a tourist store)

And I never understood that, until I became addicted. It was during my orthorexic/bulimic dieting phase that I developed an insane addiction to black coffee to curb my cravings and to give myself respite from bland food. But that developed in me a lifelong love for black coffee. Even after returning to a healthy weight I still love black coffee. I drink my coffee straight up black, no milk no sugar. I sometimes will even drink espresso like an old Italian man HAHA.

Not say I can’t drink milk coffees (in my ED phase, drinking anything with calories was considered blasphemy lol). I love an oat latte, and my favorite hot drink in the world is a soy cappuccino. But I still take my coffee pure black 80% of the time. And here’s 3 reasons why, and maybe you can consider adding black coffee to your rotation too! (The attached pictures are some of the black coffees I’ve drunk over the years)

☕️ 1. It’s refreshing and palate-cleansing.

when I’m having something sweet or desserts, I almost always order black coffee. Having a sweet cake or ice cream on top of milky coffee just seems…a bit too cloying. Black coffee cleanses my palate every single bite and just makes the dessert extra tasty 🤤 Sometimes drinking sweetened or milky coffee on a hot day just seems to make me thirstier lol. Black coffee seems to hit the spot.

☕️ 2. It’s cheap and convenient.

Brewed coffee is the cheapest thing on any coffee menu, hands down. I got a FamilyMart iced Americano for 2.80RM. I always drink my Nespresso capsules black and pay $1 and I don’t have to mess around with sugar or milk or anything like that. Those girls that post ASMR videos of prepping their coffee, yes I love to watch those but nobody is spending so much time to prep a coffee.

☕️3. You can really taste the beans.

Black coffee allows you to really taste the impact of different brewing methods and beans. The orange juice-esque flavor of medium roast African beans shine through, and the musky, earthy scent of dark roasted natural processing methods come through in Sumatran coffees. If you always think all coffee tastes the same; try your coffee black. The flavors will be unmistakable.

these are reasons why I will forever wear the black coffee pin proudly! You’ll find me at the kopitiam when I’m 80 drinking my kopi o kosong 😌
