Itโs been almost two months since both my boyfriend and I have started our jobs as fresh grads! And while starting a new job is an exciting time in anyoneโs life, it can also be a time of stress and anxiety as you navigate new territory. When youโre in a relationship, the added pressure of balancing work and your significant other can be a lot to handle. Gone are the days where we can be carefree and not worry about time, money, home, our future etc.! ๐ฅฒ
The truth is, itโs no easy feat to maintain a relationship when youโre bogged down by work stress and the added pressure of having to perform well. Sometimes these work issues spill over into your relationships, and it can even escalate into arguments/disagreements. At the end of the day though, whatโs important is that you and your partner know that itโs not personal, and you continue to choose your relationship over your work stress.
While Iโm thankful that I havenโt had any serious arguments over work so far, these are some of my personal tips for maintaining a relationship once you both begin your career:
๐ฃ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ Communication is Key! ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ
Communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship, especially when youโre both busy with work. Compared to my boyfriend, Iโm chronically online (lol) so itโs a lot easier for me to text him while working, while he can be considered a slow texter during work hours. Iโve made fun of him for this numerous times, and although he doesnโt take it to heart, he has taken it upon himself to let me know when heโd be unavailable and would text me whenever he can. Iโve also grown to accept that while itโd be nice to have him reply once I text him, itโs also good to both have that space during work hours! That space also means we have more things to talk about when we do meet!
๐ท๐ท๐ท Schedule Date Nights ๐ท๐ท๐ท
Just because youโre both working doesnโt mean you canโt have fun together! Make sure to schedule regular date nights to spend quality time with your partner. Although weโve been together for around three years, we still do our best to celebrate our โmonthsaryโ (when we remember haha) and my boyfriend also brings up the occasional โletโs have a boujee night (aka letโs go drink)โ to make things a little more exciting. I also recently suggested having a stay-in movie night to binge-watch the entire hunger games series. We also make it a point to meet for dinner every Friday, just so that we can end the work week by seeing one another! It can be super tempting to just let your inner introvert take control, but just that short amount of time spent together will do wonders. Whatever you do, make sure itโs something you both enjoy!
๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅBe One Anotherโs Hype-man ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Everyone has their work worries, goals and dreams they want to achieve, and itโs important to support each other in these aspects. As newbies at our companies, my boyfriend and I both have varying experiences of imposter syndrome, sometimes even at the same time! Make a point to talk about it to your partner and to also find out more about their work aspirations. Iโd say I can be rather emotional when things donโt go well at work, and my boyfriend is often my sounding board and voice of reason during these periods. When it comes to his work worries, I also do my best to offer encouragement during rough times and hype him up! Itโs also SUPER important to celebrate the little wins at work together too!
Starting your careers at the same time can be a challenge, but with the right mindset and communication, you can maintain a healthy relationship with your partner! Remember to make time for each other, support each otherโs goals, and be one anotherโs hype-man. With a little effort, your relationship can thrive even when youโre both busy with work.
