Asking for more money during a job interview

Everyone knows it can be awkward to request and justify a higher salary. It’s easier to start off providing a basis that also implies industry standards… without the awkwardness of outright asking/saying it.

It can be uncomfortable to go back-and-forth with a hiring manager on essentially what is the dollar value of you and your worth at the company. As a shy, people-pleaser, pushing through this conversation was a nightmare.

Until… I realized, instead of directly asking for more, you can reference salaries from similar roles to provide context. Requesting a higher salary can be awkward, but starting with comparisons to industry standards can ease the conversation!

In the past, I’ve actually mentioned offers from previous companies, but this approach feels more comfortable and less confrontational, allowing for a smoother discussion about compensation.
