JC life 101‼️

If you’re reading this, you might be considering JC aft O’s or maybe you’re just curious about what JC life is like 😏.

Id say i had a somewhat vibrant JC life since covid restrictions only loosened up in j2, but ofc there were rough times too. So lets proceed with some common questions 😙

𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 ?🤨📚✍️

As someone who spent their whole life in neighbourhood schools, i think i can give a perspective that MOST of my fellow jc students can relate to 🙂.

ObViOusLy its much harder than o level and to back this up, the cover picture was most of the lecture notes i had (standing at a whopping 1m+ not including tys).

As for timetable its really everywhere 😭 somedays u end at 1230, somedays ur last class ends at 5pm. Then between ur last 2 classes is a 3hr break and u wonder wtf ure suppose to do. Usually we do either of the 5 things:

Eat, sleep, do tutorials, play , beg the teacher of the last class to start their class earlier so we can go home earlier🫠

𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭

i believe almost every class in every school has at least 1 person who retains in j1/ drop out, for some schools or classes the rate is higher/lower. But if u consistently do ur tutorials and keep up w ur lectured you’ll probably be fine. If you retain, you can appeal to the principal/VP. However if you retain a second time, you will not be able to continue in that JC.

𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐞

Pace wise its different for every school but id say the average is abt 40% of syllabus covered in j1 and the rest in j2. In j2 average is 1 chapter every 1-2 weeks. I believe currently most schools do a hybrid of f2f lectures and asynch lectured(go home and watch lectures). In terms of homework, MOST of the time teachers choose not to collect and just go through in class. BUT PLEASE ATTEMPT UR TUTORIALS practice makes perfect 👍🤩

𝐂𝐂𝐀⛹️‍♀️💃⚽️

If you didnt know, CCA in JC is optional. This means you can have more time to focus on your studies or pursue activities outside of school (instructor in ur sec sch). However if you want to join a CCA its not like secondary sch where u cfm get into a cca. In JC, the cca CHOOSES YOU‼️ So having background in relevant CCA and stuff can help to boost ur chances of getting in. For most CCAs (choir 🎤, dance💃 , sports🏏 ) they have trials on selected days, if not they have interviews (clubs and societies). Alternatively, you can also start ur own cca!provided there are sufficient people who are interested to join the CCA. Id say CCA is an “escape” from ur academic duties so it is highly encouraged to join a CCA.

𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥

As you can tell I was from student council and i was vice cap of the traffic cone house 🥹🚦. One of the reason i chose sc was because i sucked at sports and i wanted to do something more fufilling and learn from people who were passionate and competent leaders.

However if you’re thinking about joining for portfolio, i think you should really reconsider joining SC. Its definitely hectic, stressful, and may take a toll on ur mental health if you lack the ability to manage ur time or adapt to last minute changes (eg. needing to edit proposals last min). If youre thinking of skipping CCA all the way, just know that youre not doing urself a favour and youre only making urself a bigger target on confession pages.

Additionally, SCs in some schools are more prone to cyber bullying which can be absolutely BRUTAL (body shaming, doxing, impersonating and calling you out for not making certain events possible). But ofc theres nothing teachers can do since closing down such confession pages would just result in a new one😞

Thankfully my fellow sc mates were mostly optimistic, we try to laugh it off when people say we get money from the principal, or we prevented an ogl from joining just bcuz we dont like them. At the end of a day we’re just a bunch of students chosen to “represent” our batch and voice their opinions on their behalf. Even 377A wasnt approved immediately😀. Just like how ministers need to persuade the government, we need to persuade the teachers so give SCs a break🥹

𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 + 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

Funfact, during ur 2 years in jc, you’ll have the same subject tutors and civics tutor(aka form teacher) throughout unless smth happens. So yall will be v bonded, most teachers are quite candid esp if theyre ur subj tutor AND civics tutor (you’re like the children they never asked for). I rmb my friend offering nougats to my econs teacher in class while we were snacking.

If you remember the viral no bagpack day on tiktok, just know that we have it in JP 😈 we had people bringing wheelchairs and i brought my 百家衣(quilt blanket). On top of that we have Welfare bazaars which i believe is organised by the welfare committee in SC whr vendors come to sell food,drinks,stationery,jewellery, socks, and…pots and pans ??? We also have inter house games organised by the house captains as well as orientation which is organised by SCs and executed by OGLs and SCs🫡

Sidenote if u do come to jc, u shld definitely try out for OGL. All my ogls miss orientation and all the hype energy even tho they had to come at 530am to prep for their og classes🥺

So if youre not sure what you want in the future, strong in ur academics and looking for a challenge, JOIN JC and more importantly, join JPJC 🤩
