Can we all agree “what’s up” or “ how is it going” is the worst opening line on dating apps? Or am I the weird one out here?

There is a few reasons in my personal opinion this opening line sucks:

1/ There are many conversations and this will just go into the clutter

2/ It does not inspire meaningful responses and you’ll prob just get the standard reply and the conversation breaks there

3/ It does not show interest or curiosity about the other person which is the key to keep conversations going

Dating as an adult/working adult is pretty different from dating in schools or meeting someone organically. Granted everyone might have different texting habits, but I think we can all agree that it gets tiring talking to multiple people. Also, when you are on the apps, it’s common consensus that there will be plenty of conversations. As an adult/working adult, we all have loads of other priorities, so after receiving “what’s up” 20 times, you really lose all motivation to reply to that no matter how interesting the profile might be. I get that you might be trying to keep it casual and chill, but I am sure there are much better ways to start a conversation!

I won’t say there’s a science behind what definitely works or not since dating (and honestly even holding conversations) is an ART FORM, and I don’t claim to be good at that. But hopefully these conversation inspirations can spark some creativity to help you kickstart some meaningful conversations. In my very personal opinion, just by asking a thoughtful question or starting the conversation creatively can already help you break through the clutter and form better connections.

[A great big caveat] Not everyone is comfortable meeting up at the get go, so use the follow-up questions in this post merely as an inspiration and go with the other person’s flow!
